How to Choose a Charging Cable for Your Electric Car
When selecting a charging cable, there are two key factors to consider. The first is the type of connector. In Europe, the most common standard is the Type 2 plug – you'll find it at public charging stations as well as paid vehicle charging points (in hotels, restaurants, and store parking lots). If you're buying an electric vehicle in Europe, the plug type typically won't be an issue. However, if the car is imported from, for example, the United States, you'll likely need an additional adapter. The Type 2 cable is the most common type in both the domestic and European markets, but it's always a good idea to double-check before purchasing.
The second important factor is charging power. This value determines which cable you should choose for your EV. You’ll most often come across cables with 7.4 kW, 11 kW, or 22 kW capacities. Make sure the cable’s power matches the maximum output of your vehicle’s onboard charger – the component responsible for converting AC to DC power, which charges the battery. Matching the cable to your car’s capabilities ensures efficient charging.
What Else Should You Consider When Buying an EV Charging Cable?
Once you’ve confirmed the connector type and power, consider the cable’s length. Why is this important? The right length will allow you to charge your car in a wider range of scenarios, including unexpected ones. Before purchasing, think about where you usually charge your car and choose the optimal length based on your experience. Common lengths include 6 and 8 meters. We also offer a 10-meter option.
Equally important are safety features, warranty, and product quality. EV charging cables must be durable, weatherproof, and protected against overheating or power surges. Charging safety depends heavily on the accessories used, so it's essential to choose reliable solutions backed by a warranty and produced by trusted manufacturers.
How Much Does an EV Charging Cable Cost?
Prices for EV charging cables start at around 400 PLN. The final cost depends primarily on the cable’s power rating, length, and brand. A 22 kW cable typically costs about 700 PLN or more. The longer the cable, the higher the price – simply due to the increased amount of materials used.
EV cables are more of an investment. That’s why it’s wise to review different charging accessories and choose a cable that will serve you for years. Pay attention to built-in safety features, durability, and the warranty offered by the manufacturer. This way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your cable will last.
