Eastron SDM630-Modbus V2 - Electricity meter for smart charging
An electricity meter is required to activate the smart-charging function:
Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB) - allows the charging power to be controlled according to the current load generated by the other devices in the installation.
Eco charging - allows an electric car to be charged only from surplus photovolatics.
The electricity meter for smart charging of an electric car should be installed at the power input to the house. For proper connection, you will also need an RJ10 cable (or Ethernet terminated on the wallbox side with an RJ10 connector)

What is an energy meter?
The electricity meter is used to measure the current power consumption and installation parameters. Standardly, meters are necessary for settling accounts with the electricity supplier. In the case of intelligent meters such as SDM630-Modbus V2, it is possible to connect external devices that can optimize their work thanks to the information obtained.
What is the energy meter used for when charging an electric car?
The meter allows for optimal setting of the device's operating parameters and, for example, preventing overloading of the installation. Another important function is the ability to charge the car with energy produced by photovoltaic panels.
How Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB) works
Dynamic charging management allows you to adjust the charging power to the current power consumption of the house. We measure the current drawn by the house and if the demand for power by other receivers increases (e.g. heat pump), the charging power will be reduced or charging will be temporarily stopped completely so as not to overload the home installation.
How does Eco charging work?
Charging in Eco charging mode means adapting the charging process of an electric car to the current overproduction of the photovoltaic installation (or other home power plant). Eco charging comes in 2 variants: 1. Standard - the vehicle is charged with a minimum power of 6A, unless the surplus from the photovoltaic installation allows for an increase in the charging power. 2. Green - the vehicle will only start charging when the surplus fed into the grid exceeds the minimum threshold (6A) * 6A - this is the minimum current necessary to start charging an electric car.
Where to install an energy meter for smart charging of an electric car?
The energy meter should be installed at the power input to the house (in the main switchboard) - it is important that all current consumed or output from the installation is passed through the meter. In a standard installation, the meter will be placed just after the main fuse or differential protection. If you have two separate fuse boxes for the house and garage, the meter should be placed just after the main meter from the electricity supplier.
How to connect an energy meter to a charging station?
We connect the energy meter to the charging station using a cable terminated on one end with an RJ10 connector (an Ethernet cable with 4 wires for communication can also be used for this purpose). From the meter side, we plug in the wires directly.
